The Good Ol' Days

Mr. Wizard died today! Mr. Wizard, as in Nickelodeon Mr. Wizard, who may be the only human who has ever made it possible for me to enjoy science. Or remotely understand it.

It has me remembering all the other good Nick shows I used to watch as a kid ... Today's Special, Picture Pages, Pinwheel, anyone? Ahh .. the good old days, when I used to spend summers playing outside and lazing in the lake. My bro and I usually took a lunchtime break from the outdoors, during which my mom would whip up an egg salad sandwich and some fruit and let us watch one of these fab shows. (My parents were pretty strict on TV time - basically an hour at lunch and, OF COURSE, 30 minutes later on for my ultimate favorite show, The Flintstones.)

Anyway, it's summer, and at my age, I'm still a little peeved that I don't get three solid months off to enjoy my life anymore. I think summer break is a tradition that should be carried through life. Don't Europeans practice this - or at least they get the whole month of August off, I think? I love love love my childhood summer memories, and days like today -- 85 degrees, sunny and perfect -- make me nostalgic for these things. What I wouldn't do to go back in time for a few summer weeks...

Tonight, I'm celebrating my less-exciting grown-up summer in the best way I know how: finishing work, going home to mix up some bruschetta and watermelon (not together. separate treats), and enjoying beers on my new patio with some good friends. I guess that's one thing I've got going for me. I never knew the goodness of a Leinie's Honeyweiss when I was a kid. And if you live in a part of the country where you also are unable to know the goodness of a Honeyweiss, I'm sorry for you. It truly is a gift of summer.

Since I'm in college, I am lucky enough to still have summer break. Only now, I work part-time. Of course, I'm not complaining though. I hope you enjoy your evening with friends :)

Yeah, we don't have Honeyweiss here. Leinie's does distribute to FL. So sad.

I do think you're right, I think many Eurpoeans take a month off in the summer, but that probably depends on the wealth of the family. I'm sure there are planty of people who cannot afford a month's holiday. I wish I could have a month off.

Of course, at x-mas I get 3 weeks off, so I can't complain. And I do choose to teach through the summer -- mostly b/c 4 months without an my income would be hard for us. We'd have to shut off the electricity!

"Not" distribute. Geez, I suck at typing some days.
