Have I told you all how much I love to swim? And I mean love. The first 20 years of my life were pretty much spent under water. I started swimming lessons at a mere 6 weeks old and never left the water. Growing up on the river, I guess I really had no choice - every summer day was spent on the beach by the water or diving off our boat. Those are the best memories of my life.
Now, however, I live in the big bad city and the only lakes accessible to me seem to be covered with some nasty green filth these days. Hot temps plus no rain equals un-swimmable city water (if ever it was swimmable). Yes, I could go to a pool, but when you live in a state that gives you precious few days to be outside without a parka, pools don't cut it this time of year. I want the real thing.
So, what to do? I did get out last night, but not for a run - it was still near 90 at 8 p.m. We went for a brisk 4-mile walk, though, and stopped by the park pavillion to sit by the lake and listen to the blues band. It was a great, relaxing night, but I was a little annoyed that I couldn't run (because it was too hot) and I couldn't swim (because the lake we were sitting by was so green with algae that I could walk across it).
Basically, the whole atmosphere made me realize how much I love summer, and how much I miss living on the water. Which means the only real point to this post is to whine about how I want to win the Powerball this weekend so I can buy a lake cabin up north and enjoy my summers once again. Aren't you glad I wasted your time with that?
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path, and leave a trail.

LOL. Me too! I'm glad our lakes are too big to develop algae. There's a certain little house on the Island of Kauai'i that Dee Dee and I want to buy... Sorry I wasted your time with this comment ;-)
i totally hear you!! i live nearish to Walden Pond in Massachusetts and I will admit I am TOTALLY spoiled. the lake is crawling with triathletes swimming. i know that's really annoying i'm sharing. but the actual point of my comment is that i am legitimately considering never moving back to DC (which I love) b/c there is no water to swim in. all of the triathletes there have to go so far to find open water. BOOO!
Yes, I am glad. This is my method od choice for time-wastage.
I'm with you too on this one. If you find anything that isn't green, let me know. I went swimming in Medicine Lake in Plymouth last week and was practically crawling on my knees as it was so low and was VERY weedy. Yuck.
I know how you feel. I may only be 20, but I miss all my summer activities as a kid in Illinois. Riding my bike around the town for hours on end, building magical kingdoms in the wooded areas, spending 6-7 hrs at the local pool every day (and my mother making me stay home for 2-3 days when I'd get WAY too dark).... ahhh, I miss those days.
