A few weeks ago, it was a minor news story when the organizers of Grandma's Marathon announced runners would not be allowed to use iPods or any type of headphone-required device during this year's race. Apparently this is a new USATF rule -- maybe I am late in learning this.
Nevertheless, I was waiting for the outrage to follow. Given the fact that at least every other runner I pass on the road is connected to some type of musical device, I was sure runners would storm the Grandma's office in Duluth and demand a change! But, nothing happened.
I understand the need for safety. But I also understand the need for distractions! Grandma's is a pretty big deal, and I know many runners who have made this their first marathon. As someone preparing for her first marathon, I have to say I'd be more than freaking out if, half way through training, someone yanked away my security blanket. It takes a lot to make it through 26.2 and if tunes are what do it for you, then so be it. If this is a bigger deal than I realize, can't race organizers at least wait to implement the rule change next year, before people have started training?
How do other bloggers feel about this? Am I overreacting? Obviously, this doesn't apply to me right now, but I am worried about being denied my tunes at future races. I just got my iPod; I don't want to say good-bye just yet!

"I continue to write like I have a massive audience."
As you should!
I hope the shins are holding up okay today.
Thx for the note on the goggles/eyes. It turns out...the goggles I'm using don't have latex in them. Yeah.
So it's good to know it's acceptable to keep having irritated skin and I'm not going to scar/damage myself too much :)
I love my MP3 player, and I couldn't have made it through my marathon by myself without some tunes! Bah on Grandma's, man, I was considering that one for next year.
