Thanks to Wes for great suggestions on shin splints. I focused on making yesterday's run a "flat-footed" one and tried to imagine myself gliding over the pavement, instead of bouncing. I think it worked. I didn't feel pain during or after the run, and this morning I'm still doing OK. We'll see how I feel when I head out today...
It is FINALLY acting like spring in Minnesota so I was able to do a few loops around the lake yesterday. It was heavenly! Lots of people and dogs to dodge around, but I couldn't have cared less because I was just happy to finally be outside! I finished 3 loops, about 4.5 miles as far as I can tell.
If anyone out there is familiar with Twin Cities running: do you know of a better place where I can route the trails around Como Park? I have found a couple of sites that allow you to make running routes, but I can't figure out how to map my route to make the miles accurate. I can get an OK idea of how far I'd be running, but that's it. If I wasn't so technologically disabled, I would have ventured off the lake path yesterday, but I wanted to be sure I was getting in at least 5 (I know, I came in just short.) At least the lake path has exact mileage.
I'm to the point that I'm considering a Garmin purchase; I think it would be a good thing to have as I up my miles. But I also just purchased a house so if I get one, it's going to have to come from the birthday fairy in a couple months. Until then, I'll have to work on my route-mapping skills.
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path, and leave a trail.

I nagged my husband for nearly a year to buy me a garmin b/c I figured I desperately needed on, but now that I have one (which he bought me), I rarely use it. However, if I were to use it more frequently, I do think it would be handy.
Thanks, Jess - good advice. I think I need to run a lot more miles to justify the purchase because I can see me doing the exact same thing.
